Robert and Chay Sosin, along with their adorable children, Zephyr and Lyric make up part of the mosaic of diverse, fun people who live in FIDI and the Seaport areas. These two are downtown devotees – they even got married right here in the ‘hood. Read on to find out where they hang and what they love about FIDI and the Seaport.
What do you love about the Seaport/FIDI?
Rob: Well, I grew up here and have lived here all my life. But beyond the familiarity, there’s such a magical feeling to the streets around here. The cobblestones, the Dutch angles, walking around on the weekends when nobody’s around, feeling the energy during the workdays when the streets are packed…
Chay : This area has so much rich history around it! Herman Melville lived here! When we first started dating, that inspired us to read Moby Dick together and we finished it at the Bridge Café, which was (at that point) the oldest continually operating bar in Manhattan!
What is your favorite restaurant? What is your favorite dish there?
Rob: Well, we are regulars at the Cowgirl Seahorse (259 Front Street), especially with our kids. We just were crowned trivia champs there. Best Frozen Margaritas in the city.
Chay: For just the two of us, we love Little Park (85 West Broadway). The crispy Brussels sprouts and Green Spaghetti are amazing. And don’t miss the secret bar behind the fireplace in the adjoining Smyth hotel!
Rob: For Sandwiches, man do I go for a Pisillo (97 Nassau Street) sandwich. I get The Verona with Provolone on Sfilatino and it does me RIGHT.
Chay: And I love the Kale Superfood salad at Terri (100 Maiden Lane)!
Your favorite coffee shop or bar?
Rob: Fresh Salt! We went there after our wedding in the building that’s now the Blue School!
Chay: We love Bin 220 too!
What would you like to see in the neighborhood?
Rob: I got a comic book store when Midtown Comics came down here, so I feel like I already got my wish. But I sure wouldn’t be mad if a great Greek restaurant moved in!
Chay: It would be wonderful if there were some place to have high tea downtown!
My favorite song is..
Rob: I have a bunch of songs I love to sing to my kids as I put them to bed, and I do it using my parenting innovation of 2016: YouTube Karaoke. Lyric (our youngest) is really into my cover of Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” (https://youtu.be/WZuwFDAvj9U) and Zephyr (our oldest) digs my take on the Violent Femmes’ “Blister In The Sun” (https://youtu.be/OM_AfTRA68Y) I encourage all parents to work out their own setlist!
Chay: “Bigmouth Strikes Again” by the Smiths is my theme song.
Last meal on earth?
Rob: I gotta go with the Sformato Di Spinaci at Pepolino (281 West Broadway).
Chay: A big pot of tofu at the Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan.
Your favorite piece of clothing?
Rob: I have these shiny George Cox shoes that look real sharp. Quite literally. Like they look like something you could cut yourself on.
Chay: My Issey Miyake constellation skirt! I snagged it at a sample sale.
Can’t leave home without…
Rob: My sketchbook and an architect blue pencil. You don’t need to erase!
Chay: Fleur de Sel. I carry it around with me wherever I go.
